Wait Until Next Year: “Revolt” Postponed

Michael Cera is somewhat taken aback by the rescheduling of “Youth in Revolt.”
More calendar news. If you were looking forward to seeing Michael Cera in “Youth in Revolt” on October 30th, well, change your plans and go to that Halloween party instead. Variety reports that The Weinstein Company has moved the coming of age comedy’s release date to January 15th.
Here’s the official word:
“After the fantastic response from audiences and critics at the Toronto Film Festival, we chose Jan. 15 as the best date to release ‘Youth in Revolt,’ ” a Dimension Films rep said. “Not only will this smart comedy be great counterprogramming to some of the heavier fare at that time of year, but this date will allow the film to play some more festivals and continue to build word of mouth.”
Heavier fare? In January? You mean like the cheap horror movies, comedies starring has-been sitcom stars, and the annual parody from the “Scary Movie” folk? Oh, and the movies that were once Oscar hopefuls but after completion are viewed as busts?
Well, maybe it’s not a bust, but the studio clearly thinks it will do better with less competition around. There’s some speculation that TWC was worried that the movie would get buried in the rush to “New Moon” opening a few weeks after the original “Revolt” date, losing a large part of its target audience while they can’t concentrate on anything but Bella-Edward-Jacob.
Anyway, there you go, Michael Cera fans. Now you have something to do in January.
