Kick-Ass Vaughn Wants ‘Sandman’

Neil Gaiman’s Sandman

Kick-Ass is probably the film I’m most looking forward to seeing in 2010; it’s certainly right up there alongside Iron Man 2, Alice In Wonderland and a host of others due out over the next 12 (well, 11 now) months.

The man behind Kick-Ass is Matthew Vaughn, previously best known for directing Stardust. But Vaughn isn’t settling just for Kick-Ass, and told Comic Book Resources recently of his wish to helm another cult comic book, namely Sandman by Neil Gaiman. He said:

“The idea that no one has made “Sandman” yet is weird. I would love to do ‘Sandman’ but I think it’s stuck in development hell. But that could be like a ‘Lord of the Rings’ – just a huge movie.”

“I think Neil deserves to have more stuff made. I think it’s weird that hardly any Neil Gaiman stuff has been made.”

As well as talking about Kick-Ass and Sandman, Vaughn also spoke a little about his taste in comic books and how it has changed over the years. He revealed:

“It’s funny, my taste in comics… I sort of go in and out about what I like and don’t like. At the moment, I can’t read “Spider-Man.” Maybe I’ve just gotten too old for it. But maybe it’s because, at the moment, I’m into the more realistic side of comics.”

Which is why Kick-Ass is such a good fit for Vaughn, seeing as it is about ordinary people doing extraordinary things rather than superheroes imbued with special powers just doing what comes naturally.

If Kick-Ass does well at the box office then I say give Vaughn a crack at Sandman as well. He’s certainly passionate enough about the subject matter to handle it in the right way.
