Jackman Trying to Seal Deal For “Real Steel”

So thankful for Hugh Jackman…

Variety reports that Hugh Jackman is in talks to star in “Real Steel.” Shawn Levy is set to direct.

Okay. Here’s the plot as described by Variety, because I’m not going to do a better job without losing focus halfway through and making up my own story:

Pic is a Rocky-esque tale of a fighter who has to reinvent himself when human boxing becomes obsolete, replaced by 2000 pound human-like robots. Jackman is negotiating to play the ex-fighter, who becomes a Robot Boxing promoter, but whose chances of success are hampered by his access to sub-standard robot parts. That is until he discovers a discarded robot that always seems to win. The ex-fighter has also discovered he’s the father of a 13-year old son, and they bond as the robot brawls its way toward the top.

The film is based on a story by the legendary and prolific Richard Matheson. The classic sci-fi writer is probably best known for his story “I Am Legend,” which of course has been filmed three times, most recently with Will Smith starrring and leading the way to kazabillions of worldwide box office. Mr. Matheson is money.

Jackman just opened on Broadway in “A Steady Rain,” with Daniel Craig. The play runs until December 7th (it’s sold out…what a surprise). It seems like Jackman has a number of other projects going on, but apparently thinks he’ll be free next summer, when “Real Steel” is supposed to begin filming. And he better film this really fast, because by then we will need him back on Broadway, preferably in a musical. We love you all singing, all dancing, Hugh.
