“Tron Legacy” Lines Up IMAX Release
Picture this really, really, really big.
It seems like just the other day that we were talking about how “Spider-Man 4″ is going to be released in IMAX theaters the same day as its general debut (May 5, 2011). Hey, it WAS just the other day.
Now we have more IMAX news–ComingSoon says “Tron Legacy” also has the IMAX theaters locked in for their opening on December 17th, 2010. Again, I note how important revenue from IMAX theaters has become for movies, sometimes pushing them into the number one slot on opening weekends. I know, you’re saying, “Money is money, is it really that important whether a movie finishes first or second if it’s a solid take?” Well, yes, it is important–people like winners and if they hear a movie is number one, they’re more inclined to make it their choice over the next weekend. Taking first place over its opening weekend can help support a movie into its second week. “Tron Legacy” is opening the same day as “The Green Hornet” and the IMAX release could help push the ’80s movie sequel into first place.
Nailing down IMAX releases is a big deal because there are still only a limited number of theaters available. The next question is when we can expect to see a flurry of new IMAX locations opening.
