‘Harry Potter’ Movies Re-released In 3D?

Harry Potter Stars

Surprised? No, me neither. After all, what ISN’T being filmed, converted, or re-released in 3D these days.

The two Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows movies are going to be in 3D thanks to undergoing the conversion process which completely failed to bring Alice in Wonderland to life. OK, that’s fine, and not the least bit unexpected.

But the older Harry Potter movies could also be converted in the same way and re-released, at least according to HP producer David Heyman talking to MTV. He said:

Those discussions haven’t yet happened, but I’m sure it’s just a matter of time. You know what? I actually shouldn’t say that. Who knows? It would be great. You can never tell. I hope so.

And I hope not, because what is the point? 3D is here now, an emerging technology, and when it works (Avatar) it works well. But the movies need to be of a certain cinematic quality, and actually filmed in 3D to be worth the effort. While the Harry Potter movies are possibly cinematic enough, they’ve been and gone, and cannot be filmed in 3D. And converted films suck.

Where will this end? Why not go back and convert Gone With The Wind into 3D? Or how about Metropolis? Or the Laurel and Hardy movies? Cinema works because it echoes the present, the now; so leave already-made films as they were originally produced. For the love of all that is holy.
